Natural Zeolite for Sustainable Groundwater Softening: Experimental Evaluation of Total Hardness Removal from Borehole Water in Singida Municipality, Tanzania

Abstract:
Groundwater constitutes a major source of potable water for domestic, agricultural, and institutional uses in many parts of Singida Municipality, Tanzania. Despite its widespread utilization, groundwater quality is frequently compromised by elevated concentrations of dissolved calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) ions, which are the principal contributors to total hardness. Excessive water hardness adversely affects both domestic and industrial water use by promoting scale formation in pipelines, storage facilities, and heating systems, reducing the efficiency and lifespan of water-related infrastructure, increasing soap and detergent consumption, and impairing the aesthetic and operational quality of water. Consequently, the development of efficient, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable technologies for hardness removal remains an important objective for groundwater treatment. Natural zeolite is a crystalline hydrated aluminosilicate mineral possessing a well-defined porous framework and a high cation exchange capacity (CEC), characteristics that make it an effective adsorbent for the removal of hardness-causing ions from water. Its water-softening mechanism is primarily governed by ion exchange, whereby Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions in groundwater are selectively exchanged with exchangeable cations, predominantly Na⁺, located within the zeolitic structure. Owing to its abundance, low cost, chemical stability, regenerability, and environmental compatibility, natural zeolite has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional water-softening technologies, particularly in resource-limited settings where advanced treatment systems are economically impractical. This study investigated the effectiveness of natural zeolite for reducing total hardness in groundwater obtained from a water borehole in Singida Municipality, Tanzania. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the initial total hardness of the groundwater, evaluate the hardness removal efficiency of natural zeolite under controlled treatment conditions, and assess its suitability as a sustainable and cost-effective material for groundwater softening. The outcomes of this study are expected to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the application of natural zeolite for groundwater treatment and to provide scientific evidence supporting its adoption as a sustainable water-softening technology in regions affected by hard groundwater. Furthermore, the findings may serve as a basis for the development of affordable and environmentally responsible groundwater treatment strategies suitable for rural and peri-urban communities in Tanzania and comparable hydrogeological settings.
